Burnt Mountain

On July 6th, 2018 Dennis Stilwell and I hiked into Burnt Mountain via the Ironstone Mountain trail #1141. This year the snow was mostly gone, but many of the wildflowers were not in full bloom yet. We did see a large herd of Mountain Goats and had a wonderful hike to the summit of Burnt Mountain. Gallery has 15 images.

July 6th, 2018 - After leaving the trailhead sign, we walked a short distance to an overlook with an outstanding view. Burnt Mountain (6596') is on the left and Shellrock Peak (6835') in the center. Our hike for this day is to the Burnt Mountain summit on the left.

July 6th, 2018 - Broadleaf Lupine (Lupinus latifolius) - This is a very common Lupine of the forest and easy to identify due to its big leaves.

July 6th, 2018 - Thompson's Paintbrush (Castilleja thompsonii) - Always a joy to see, whether at home on Cowiche Creek or at 6000' in the mountains. Notice these are a little smaller than the ones we have down lower.

July 6th, 2018 - Silvery Lupine (Lupinus argenteus) - This lupine likes the more open sandy ground and grows well even near the upper parts of Burnt Mountain. Makes nice large silvery clusters.

July 6th, 2018 - Spreading Phlox (Phlox diffusa) - Very similar to the Hood's Phlox (Phlox hoodii) we see in the Sagebrush Steppe down lower. It can be seen in white and shades of Lavender at higher elevations in the mountains.

July 6th, 2018 - The view from the top of Burnt Mountain is spectacular, In this image you can see Bismarck Peak (7585') on the Left and Mt Aix (7766') on the right. This is the heart of the William O Douglass wilderness.

July 6th, 2018 - Along the trail #1141 (Ironstone Mountain) going back you enter an old burn area. Trail #1140 (Burnt Mountain) takes off from here going down to its beginning in Strawberry Meadows (3800'), a long way down.
